Pyrography is the art of woodburning, allowing one to ‘paint’ with heat. The amalgamation of the ancient Greek ‘pyr’ (fire) and ‘graphein’ (to write) points to the longstanding tradition of this medium beautifully, when a woodburning tool consisted of metal heated in the fire and poked at the material.
I’ve started exploring this medium on and off about two years ago. It’s a wonderful, ongoing experimentation with the pressure to apply, the type of wood to use, and the steadiness of your hand.
While dappling in different media and materials, my love for pyrography has most certainly been kindled.
The photos below show alternations between decorative projects like serving boards, and explorations with pieces of deadwood found in the forest.
